About Carlos Cobiella

Carlos Cobiella is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University College Hospital and The Shoulder Unit at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth. He grew up in Spain where he went to Medical School. He graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1989 and started his surgical training there. He moved to London in 1992 and continued his Basic Surgical Training in several Teaching Hospitals in the London area.

In 1996 he gained access to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Specialist Training Programme in Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery. That gave him a chance to train at the Shoulder Unit under the guidance of Messrs Ian Bailey, Paul Calvert and Simon Lambert and also at the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit with Professors Rolfe Birch and Thomas Carlstedt.

Mr Cobiella was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an Upper Limb interest at the Whittington Hospital in 2003. He moved to University College Hospital in 2005 to develop his academic interest and has led the expansion of the Upper Limb Unit, now consisting of two Shoulder & Elbow and two Hand Surgeons.  He supervises the training of medical students, orthopaedic surgeons in training and a Fellow specialising in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He continues to publish within his field.

His main interest remains in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, including arthroscopic surgery for rotator cuff pathology and instability, shoulder and elbow replacements, trauma and, particularly, sports injuries.
