About Dr Grant Syme

Grant Syme is a Consultant Physiotherapist working for NHS Fife and has been qualified for 28 years.  He started his career working as a rotational physiotherapist in NHS Lanarkshire before moving to NHS Lothian and then to NHS Fife.  He did, however, have a two-year period in a large private hospital in Edinburgh in the mid nineties.  Additionally, he has worked part-time as a physiotherapist for the Scottish Rugby Union and other sports teams e.g. volleyball, football and rugby.  He also worked in occupational health services in the steel and health products industries.  Prior to taking up his Consultant role in 2008 he worked as an Extended Scope/Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner in orthopaedics for ten years.  He continues, as part of his Consultant role, to undertake extended scope/advanced practice orthopaedic clinical work in the areas of knees, spines and shoulders.

He has always been passionate about physiotherapy and has taken opportunities to continue to develop his career.  Following his original BSc degree in Physiotherapy in Glasgow in 1989, he went on to complete a BSc (Hons) in Health Studies in 1993, an MSc in Orthopaedic Rehabilitation in 1999 and a PhD in Physiotherapy in 2007.  More recently he completed an MBA in 2016 with a dissertation specialising in leadership and educational ‘threshold concepts’.  He has a passion for research and his current research relates to communication and the use of ‘personal outcomes’ in advanced physiotherapy practice.

In 2015 he was awarded a Fellowship from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, predominately related to work in enhancing the national profile and infrastructure for Advanced Practice Physiotherapists in the UK and developing several resources to support these roles.
